RECORDED AT CABIN STUDIOS, COVENTRY ON JULY 3rd 1996
PRODUCED BY SONIC BOOM "IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOE MEEK, INNOVATOR
AND GENIUS 5/4/29-3/2/67"
"Sputnik" is the sound of harmony in deep space. A
black hole vibration which throbs and pluses while untold billions
of star clusters collide and explode to the rhythm of its soft
destruction.
Sonic Boom is earthbound with little hope of leaving his home
planets rock strewn crust. But like such space sound pioneers
as Joe Meek, Sun Ra and Silver Apples he really doesn't need
to know what zero gravitational pull feels like or what the true
color of Saturn's gaseous ring really are......In his imagination
he has already voyaged beyond the known galaxies and "Sputnic"
is just an example of what he discovered out there.
This time pop has been bent out of shape so that vocal chorusing
can be replaced by the warbling of theremins and the low dusty
hum of ancient valves warming into action. Is it thse alien relationship
between man and machines here that produces the shimmering "Sputnik"
vibe, the sound of tommorow today with only the slightest hint
of 60's nostalgia added for good measure.
Sonic Boom is a musician who has set his controls for the future,
and unswerved by the dictates of fashion his mission is to explore
new zones of musical appreciaiton and construction and report
back If you really want to hear something fantastic going down
then lend him your ears.

The material on this disc is intended as a soundscape which reflects
time from pre-histry and the dinosaur age through to modern digital
communication and 20th century travel, with sounds influenced
by - and sometimes emulating - computers, dinosaurs, digital
infomation streams, synthetic speech patterns, insects, various
wild and domestic animals, musical sounds and the noise of modern
day transport such as jets, trucks, motorcycles, trams, trolley
cars and trains.
These sounds, while sometimes recognisable, are often stretched
and manipulated into a new form. All were created from a mixture
of acoustic, computer generated, synthesised and electro-acoustic
origins.
More specifically this pallette incloudes manipulated percussion,
treated viola, customised animal and insect voise synthesisers,
modified human voice synthesisers, modular electronic music synthesisers,
bass guitar and theremin - together giving a very wide timbral
range from which to sculpt and from the music.
These pieces personify E.A.R.'s most interesting work in improvisational
playing and sounds generation and are amongst the most complex
works released by them - in particular contrast to their more
hyperminimal work such as the "Koner Experimant", showing
another side to their vision. The musicians involved span the
whole musical spectrum, with Eddie Prevost's work in AMM and
the avant garde and jazz improvisational fields, Tom Prentice's
classical work and Sonic Boom's work in electronic and underground
rock with Spacemen 3 and Spectrum.
These discs were recorded at a 24 track analogue studio and represent
the only live recordings of E.A.R.

The sound collages on this disc were created using 8 human voice
synthesisers, originally marketed by Texas Instruments as the
"Speak & Spell" range of toys during the 1970's.
These instruments have been customized with added switches, buttons,
knobs & wiring to give phoneme looping, random phrase generation,
various modulations, pitch shifting & other non-standard
effects.
Some processing with equalisation & effects was then added
using a Morley phaser & a modified EMS VCS3.
This process, often called "circuit bending", exploits
the inherent instabilities in the circuitry of audio toys, radios,
and other soundmaking instruments by sending electronic signals
& data to and from previously unrelated circuit-board points
giving unique, unpredictable & highly unusual sounds.
Circuit Bending, Data Rape and All That Jazz
This disc introduces a revolutionary new type of sound and music
generation called circuit bending. This process involves taking
cheaply available electronic soundmaking toys (in this case mostly
Texas Instruments' "Speak & Spell"(R) human voice
synthesising toys from the late 1970's, but also applicabic to
all sorts of keyboards, effects boxes and samplers) and adding
extra wires, knobs and switches to make new connections between
parts of the internal circuitry and chips. This sends data and
electronic signals to previously unrelated circuit-board points
- inducing through a strange sort of "Data Rape" -
astounding new sounds, chance evolving compositions & textures,
phoneme freezing and looping, random glottal pulse and phoneme
generation, complex lattice filtering and unique pitch shifting
techniques.
Electronically, this Circuit Bending provides some of the most
consuming, interesting and surprising noises available. What's
more its available to anyone as it costs so little to explore.
The origins of these instruments may have been toys, but there
is nothing childish about their sonic output. Whether randomly
reorganising samples, creating chance and random music, morphing
synthesised vocal sounds or letting electrical current flow through
the body to modify sounds in indescribable ways - the chaos ensuing
from the clear illogic being presented to the circuitry can be
both inspirational and mesmerising.
A Brief History
Experimental Audio Research was formed in 1990 by Sonic Boom
as a solo and collaborative ensemble in order to pursue the more
experimental work he had contributed to Spacemen 3 since the
1980's.
The project revolves around two separate yet overlapping areas
- studio recording and live performance, both environments being
treated as complimentary but different sides of the same coin.
E.A.R.'s main ethos, embodied in their acronymous name, is one
of necessary experimentation. They create a space where any sound
or texture, technique or emotion is treated as a possible contribution
to the pieces(s) in hand. The same applies to the interaction
of the performers - improvisation and integration are left open,
until what feels like the right moment, all the while keeping
an eye on the whole, and avoiding a forum where concept overtakes
content.
E.A.R.'s members and musical philosophies run the gamut from
purely Electronically generated sounds - produced instantaneously
- to beautifully crafted Acoustic techniques - the product of
a lifetime's experience. This is a rare terrain where individual
extremes merge in the collective sound - each member exploring
the possibilities of the integration of opposites.
By definition each of the group's performances are quite different
- to replicate performances is of no interest. Surprise and variety
are far more important - yet all within and around their intended
framework and disciplines. In this way the group creates a special
kind of sound-scape and mood space aiming forwards whilst heeding
yesterdays experiments and advances. To ignore the work of Cage,
Varese, Stockhausen or Cardew would be foolhardy. To dismiss
the experiments of LaBradford, Joe Meek, Eno or Kraftwerk would
equally be a mistake. E.A.R. exists in the furrow between the
low brow and the high brow - between traditional and contemporary
- Independent of categorisations, where AMM can meet Spacemen
3, where classical music can meet My Bloody Valentine. Where
preconceptions and prejudice can be left outside and sounds can
exist for their intrinsic values. Where sounds can show their
true selves.
To assume that this approach must lack discipline is a common
mistake. The discipline is mirrored by the freedom given the
performers, keeping its aims pure and free from excess. aiming
to be progressive, but not just for progressiveness' sake.
The instruments used In their recordings and performances do
not revolve around the chromatic scale, and no amount of divisions
per octave is defined before hand - indeed many of the instruments
from the Theremin and Modular synthesisers to the Insect and
Human voice generators "lack" any fretted or keyed
sequential controllers to even suggest a particular mode or scale.
In this way, the most stimulating range of sounds is come by,
because it is the most stimulating and not for any predetermined
reasons. Likewise, the sounds selected come from various random
or heuristic programming functions and improvisational playing
techniques rather than from a preset bank of sounds - none of
these instruments have a "memory" or "preset"
facility - giving unique sounds every time the instrument is
used. In this way the performer becomes the selector from the
near infinite possible range of textures.
The Future
E.A.R. is a long term evolving project. Experimenting with new
musical genre and sounds is a lifetime commitment for its members.
Breaking music down to its essential elements, giving every sound
an equal validity, and integrating material from the possibilities
presented are fundamental. E.A.R. exists to make sounds and music
to convey moods, thoughts and feelings, to put outline and form
to the intangible and the exotic. The path they tread may have
no end, but it certainly seems to be widening out. Time and taste
appear to be coming around to their way of thinking as attitudes
change to the more experimental forms of the aural and visual
arts and the values the group hold dear become the currency of
a new generation.

Sonic Boom 'SUPERPATCH'
Pete Kember [aka 'Sonic Boom'] formed 'E.A.R.' in 1990 as a solo
and collaborative ensemble in order to pursue the more experimental
work he had contributed to 'SPACEMEN 3' since the l980s. 'SUPERPATCH'
was created by linking two EMS VCS3 synthesisers to create a
wash of interacting elements, the very low frequencies come from
the bass theremin specially built for the Mount Vernon Arts Lab
by JaKe Rothman. Also part of the ebb and flow of 'SUPERPATCH'
is the introduction of a revolutionary type of sound and music
generation called 'circuit bending'. This process involves taking
cheaply available electronic sound making toys and adding extra
wires, knobs and switches to make new connections between parts
of the internal circuitry. This sends data and electronic signals
to previously unrelated circuit-board points. Electronically,
'circuit bending' provides some of the most astounding, consuming,
interesting and surprising noises available.

Spectrum: Rise
Experimental Audio Research: Shimmer
John Massoni & Sonic Boom: Flange
Notes:
Spectrum - Rise
Formed in 1991 by former Spacemen 3 mainman Sonic Boom. Rise
shows Spectrum at their most abstract, with its upward glide
of pitch, tone, intensity and dynamic - illustrating the more
explorative end of their progressive rock and pop material.
Experimental Audio Research - Shimmer
E.A.R. are a shifting organisation centred around Sonic Boom's
more progressive and minimal explorations into experimental sound
generating, composition and improvisational sound forms. Often
joined by other master soundsmiths such as Kevin Shields, Eddie
Pr钁ost and Delia Derbyshire, E.A.R. exist in the furrow between
the low brow and the high brow, where sounds are made and exist
for their own intrinsic values, in a forum where Concept never
takes precedent to Content. In this way they seek to exist in
an atmosphere as equally at home with automatic compositional
systems AND unplanned sound events, with carefully programmed
electronic devices AND found instruments and sound sources. This
surely is music for today's less inhibited and more demanding
sound consumers.
John Massoni & Sonic Boom: Flange
Seattle's John Massoni is a veteran of the city's underground,
predating the city's grunge onslaught by several years. In Massoni's
music there echoes a childlike innocence only retained and captured
by a handful of artists, and this home recording shows a more
pensive, weather beaten side to his hypnotic music.

ABOUT THIS RECORD
THE SOUNDS ON THIS DISC WERE INSPIRED BY EXPERIMENTS WITH BRION
GYSIN'S DREAMACHINE. THE ENCLOSED RECORDINGS IS INTENDED TO ACCOMPANY
THE DREAMACHINE EXPERIENCE.
BRION GYSIN AND DREAMACHINE
THE DREAMACHINE IS THE INVENTION OF BRION GYSIN, ARTIST, TRAVELLER,
WRITER AND ALCHEMIST. ONE OF THE UNSUNG ENGLISH PAINTERS OF THE
20TH CENTURY, GYSIN WAS EXPELLED BY BRETON FROM THE SURREALISTS
TO BECOME A SEMINAL INFLUENCE ON WILLIAM BURROUGHS, INTRODUCING
HIM TO THE USE OF CUT-UPS IN WRITING. IN THE LATE 1960S IT WAS
GYSIN WHO INTRODUCED THE ROLLING STONES' BRIAN JONES TO THE TRANCE
MUSIC OF THE MUSIC OF THE MASTER MUSICIANS OF JOUJOUKA.
THE DREAMACHINE AROSE FROM BRION GYSIN'S OBSERVATIONS OF THE
EFFECTS OF PASSING RAPIDLY THROUGH A VALE OF TREES, THE FLICKERING
OF SUNLIGHT CAUSING HIM TO ENTER INTO AN ALTERED STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS.
THE PROCESS ITSELF WAS KNOWN TO NORTH AFRICAN TRIBESMEN WHO ENTERED
TRANCE LIKE STATES THROUGH THE RAPID MOVEMENT OF THEIR HANDS
TILTED TOWARDS THE SUN.
MANY USERS OF THE DREAMACHINE HAVE REFERRED TO IT AS A DRUG FREE
TRIP WITH THE EMPHASIS ON INWARD TRAVEL INTO THE AREAS OF ONE'S
OWN UNCONSCIOUS DREAM STATE.
PART OF ALL MAGICAL PROCESS IS THE PRODUCTION OF ONE'S OWN TOOLS.
THE DREAMACHINE PLANS ENABLE YOU TO TAKE PART IN JUST SUCH A
PROCESS BY MAKING YOUR OWN DREAMACHINE, THROUGH THE SIMPLE PROCESS
OF DRAWING OUT THE DESIGN, OBTAINING AN OLD 78RPM RECORD DECK,
AND CONSTRUCTING THE MACHINE, YOU ARE ACTIVELY WORKING WITHIN
THE OLDEST TRADITIONS.
THE DREAMACHINE IS PROBABLY THE FIRST VISUAL DEVICE TO BE VIEWED
WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED - WHAT WE WANT TO SEE IS INSIDE. TO MAKE
THE BEST USE OF THE DREAMACHINE SET IT UP SO THAT YOU CAN SIT
COMFORTABLY WITH YOUR FACE CLOSED TO THE CENTRE OF THE COLUMN.
A KALEIDOSCOPE OF LIGHT WILL RESULT AND SLOWLY THESE TURN INTO
ARCHETYPAL VISIONS.
